Hidden Risk in Diet: Many Americans Overlook a Key Cancer Link

A recent survey reveals that nearly half of Americans are unaware that processed meat consumption is associated with a higher risk of colorectal cancer. Conducted among over 2,200 adults in February 2026, the poll highlights a significant knowledge gap. However, awareness appears to influence attitudes—once informed, about two-thirds of participants supported adding warning labels to processed meat products.

Experts are increasingly concerned as colorectal cancer is now a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among individuals under 50. Despite this, only one in three adults recall discussing diet-related cancer risks with a healthcare professional.

Research indicates that adopting a plant-based diet, increasing fiber intake, maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol, and staying active can significantly reduce risk. Even small dietary improvements—like adding fiber-rich foods—can make a meaningful difference in long-term health outcomes.
