India and WFP Partner to Supply Fortified Rice for Global Hunger Relief

The Government of India and the World Food Programme (WFP) have signed a Letter of Intent (LoI), marking a major step in their collaboration to combat global hunger. Under this initiative, the Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD) will enable WFP to source fortified rice from India, supporting vulnerable populations in food-insecure and crisis-affected regions worldwide.

This partnership highlights the value of global cooperation and India’s role as an agricultural surplus nation contributing to humanitarian aid. Guided by the ethos of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—“the world is one family”—India aims to share its resources responsibly to strengthen collective food security.

WFP’s deputy executive director praised India’s commitment at a time when humanitarian needs are growing and funding remains strained. The LoI builds on discussions held at the WFP Executive Board side event in Rome (February 2025), laying the foundation for a reliable supply of food grains for global relief efforts.
