Nightly Pistachio Snacks May Improve Gut Health in Prediabetes

A recent study suggests that eating pistachios at night may positively impact gut bacteria in adults with prediabetes. Conducted over two 12-week phases with 51 participants, the randomized crossover trial found that replacing a traditional carb-based bedtime snack with two ounces of pistachios significantly altered the gut microbiome. Specifically, beneficial bacteria such as Roseburia and members of the Lachnospiraceae family increased, both known for producing butyrate—a compound vital for gut health and reducing inflammation. Conversely, bacteria linked to adverse metabolic outcomes, like Blautia hydrogenotrophica and Eubacterium flavonifractor, decreased. These microbial shifts may support better glucose regulation and reduce risks linked to Type 2 diabetes. Though more research is needed to confirm long-term health outcomes, the study underscores pistachios’ potential as a functional food. The research was funded by the American Pistachio Growers and registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT04056208).
