Synthetic Dyes Found in One-Fifth of U.S. Packaged Foods, Study Warns

A new study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics reveals that nearly 20% of packaged foods and beverages in U.S. grocery stores contain synthetic dyes, chemicals linked to hyperactivity and behavioral issues in children. Researchers analyzed 39,763 products from the 25 largest food manufacturers and found that colorful, sugary items—including candies, cereals, and sports drinks—were the most likely to contain artificial colors.

Products marketed to children were particularly concerning: 28% contained synthetic dyes, compared to 11% of other foods, and had 141% more sugar on average. Confectionery companies like Ferrero (60%) and Mars (52%) were among the top users.

Experts warn that synthetic dyes and high sugar levels remain widespread despite known health risks. They urge regulators to require warning labels similar to those in the European Union and advise parents to avoid brightly colored, high-sugar foods for children.
