A clinical trial from the University of Bonn suggests that eating mostly oatmeal for just two days may significantly improve cholesterol levels and metabolic health. Researchers studied people with metabolic syndrome, a condition marked by excess weight, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and unhealthy lipid levels. Participants followed a calorie-restricted plan that included about 300 grams of oatmeal daily, divided into three meals with small portions of fruits or vegetables.
Compared with a control group that reduced calories without eating oats, those on the oat-based plan experienced a larger drop in LDL, or “bad,” cholesterol—about 10 percent on average. They also lost around two kilograms and saw slight improvements in blood pressure. Scientists observed changes in gut bacteria, which produced beneficial compounds that may support cholesterol metabolism. Interestingly, these positive effects were still noticeable six weeks later, suggesting that short, intensive oat-based dietary periods could support heart and metabolic health.
