Wild Blueberries Show Promise for Heart and Metabolic Health

A new scientific review brings together decades of research exploring how wild blueberries may support cardiometabolic health, including blood vessel function, blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar control. Published in Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition, the review evaluates 12 human clinical trials conducted over 24 years, along with numerous supporting studies.

The strongest and most consistent evidence points to improvements in vascular function, with some benefits seen shortly after consumption and others after regular intake. Findings related to blood pressure, lipid levels, and glucose regulation are encouraging, particularly among people with higher cardiometabolic risk, though more large-scale trials are needed.

The review also highlights the role of the gut microbiome. Most blueberry polyphenols reach the colon, where gut bacteria convert them into active compounds that may drive health effects. Emerging evidence also links wild blueberry intake to better cognitive performance in older adults.

Overall, consuming about one cup of wild blueberries daily—often frozen—may offer meaningful support for long-term heart and metabolic health.
