The government has introduced a major HIV Action Plan aimed at eliminating new HIV transmissions in England by 2030. The strategy focuses on reducing stigma, expanding testing, and reconnecting the estimated 5,000 people who have fallen out of HIV care due to issues such as mental health challenges, poverty or discrimination. Funded with over £170 million, the plan includes continued opt-out HIV testing in emergency departments and a new trial allowing home testing kits to be ordered through the NHS App.
Leaders across health agencies praised the initiative, stressing the importance of reaching underserved groups, including Black communities, heterosexual populations, older adults, and women. The plan also strengthens access to PrEP, enhances prevention programmes, and introduces anti-stigma training for healthcare staff. By improving early diagnosis, treatment access and supportive care, the Action Plan aims to ensure people living with HIV can stay healthy, prevent transmission, and receive care without judgement.
