Coffee May Reshape Gut Health and Mood, New Study Suggests

A new study from APC Microbiome Ireland, part of University College Cork, sheds light on how coffee influences the gut-brain axis—the complex communication network linking digestion and mental health. Published in Nature Communications, the research reveals that both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee can alter gut bacteria and impact mood.

The study compared regular coffee drinkers with non-drinkers, tracking biological and psychological changes. Results showed that coffee consumption reshapes the gut microbiome, increasing certain beneficial bacteria linked to digestion and emotional well-being. Participants also reported reduced stress, depression, and impulsivity after reintroducing coffee.

Interestingly, decaffeinated coffee was associated with improvements in learning and memory, suggesting compounds like polyphenols may play a role. Meanwhile, caffeinated coffee enhanced alertness and reduced anxiety.

According to experts, coffee’s effects extend beyond caffeine, influencing metabolism, gut health, and emotional balance in complementary ways.
