Healthcare bankruptcies saw an uptick in the first quarter of 2026, reversing a decline observed last year, according to a report by Gibbins Advisors. A total of 12 healthcare companies with liabilities exceeding $10 million filed for Chapter 11, marking a 33% increase compared to the previous quarter.
Senior care providers and physician practices were the most affected segments, each accounting for four filings. Mid-sized companies, with liabilities between $10 million and $50 million, represented nearly two-thirds of all cases, while larger filings above $100 million remained stable.
Although bankruptcies dropped significantly in 2025—from 79 cases in 2023 to 45—the sector now appears to be trending upward again. If current patterns continue, filings could reach 48 in 2026, reflecting a modest 7% increase year-on-year.
The industry continues to face financial strain from rising costs, reimbursement pressures, and policy shifts. Changes to Medicaid and reduced subsidies under the Affordable Care Act are expected to further impact provider revenues, adding to the sector’s ongoing challenges.
