Exercise Boosts Colon Cancer Survival, Study Finds

A major international study has found that regular exercise can cut the risk of death from colon cancer by over a third. The trial involved 889 patients who had completed chemotherapy. Half joined a three-year exercise program, including brisk walking 3–4 times a week, supported by coaching sessions. The other half received general health advice.

After five years, 80% of those in the exercise group were cancer-free, compared to 74% in the control group — a 28% lower risk of recurrence. After eight years, the death rate was 10% in the exercise group versus 17% in the control, marking a 37% reduction in mortality.

Researchers aren’t sure why exercise has such effects but suggest it may influence hormones, inflammation, and immune function. The findings could change how colon cancer is treated worldwide.
