A recent report from the Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy/Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT shows that over 70% of U.S. hospitals used predictive artificial intelligence (AI) in 2024, up from 66% in 2023. Predictive AI helps forecast outcomes such as readmission risk and supports administrative tasks like billing, appointment scheduling, and identifying high-risk patients.
Adoption is uneven: 86% of hospitals affiliated with health systems use predictive AI, compared with just 37% of independent facilities. Similarly, only 50% of critical-access hospitals and 56% of rural hospitals reported use, versus 80% and 81% of their non-critical access and urban counterparts.
Hospitals actively monitor their AI tools, with 82% evaluating accuracy, 74% checking for bias, and 79% conducting post-implementation reviews. Multiple internal committees and leaders often oversee these evaluations. While predictive AI adoption grows, non-administrative applications like treatment recommendations remain limited due to higher risks.
