The National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) has recommended replacing the term “paramedical” with “allied and healthcare” across all states, UTs, institutions, and universities. This move aligns with the NCAHP Act, 2021, which standardizes terminology and formally defines allied and healthcare professions under a unified framework.
The Commission advises discontinuing “paramedical” in all official documents, policies, and communications. Instead, the term “allied and healthcare,” covering professionals trained in diagnostic, therapeutic, and support services, should be used.
The Act defines qualification standards, including minimum durations for diplomas and degrees. It also distinguishes between allied health professionals and healthcare professionals, covering 56 professions under 10 categories.
States and UTs have been asked to ensure compliance and inform all relevant stakeholders. The Act also provides for regulation, education standards, and a central/state register system to advance healthcare quality.
