Ransomware Breach Exposes Data of 2.7 Million DaVita Patients

Kidney care provider DaVita has confirmed that a ransomware attack exposed sensitive data of 2.7 million people, making it one of the largest healthcare breaches reported to federal regulators in 2024. The company discovered unauthorized access on April 12, later linked to the ransomware group Interlock, which leaked stolen files online.

The compromised information included names, addresses, Social Security numbers, insurance records, and dialysis lab test results. Although patient care continued, DaVita said billing and revenue collection were disrupted, with the incident costing $13.5 million in Q2 expenses.

DaVita, which operates more than 2,600 dialysis centers nationwide, has since restored impacted systems but warned of longer-term financial and operational impacts. Federal agencies, including the FBI and HHS, recently issued alerts about Interlock’s activities across North America and Europe. The attack underscores rising threats to healthcare, where ransomware can delay treatment and compromise patient safety.
