Rat-Borne Illnesses Spark Health Crisis in Sarajevo

Sarajevo is facing a health crisis as rat infestations surge, with social media flooded by images of rodents swimming in the Miljacka River and overflowing garbage bins. Poor sanitation and a lack of pest control have led to a spike in leptospirosis—known as “rat fever”—with a dozen cases reported in one day. The disease, spread through water or soil contaminated by rat urine, can cause severe symptoms, including lung bleeding and kidney failure. Authorities have declared an epidemic, launching emergency clean-up efforts across public areas and schools. The outbreak follows two years without pest control due to a failed sanitation tender. Health Minister Enis Hasanovic called it a “communal crisis,” while others warn it may escalate, possibly leading to hantavirus. Fortunately, no serious cases have been reported yet, but experts caution the risk remains high if action lags.
