WHO launches new guideline to prevent adolescent pregnancies and improve girls’ health

The World Health Organization (WHO) has released updated guidelines to address adolescent pregnancy, the leading cause of death among 15–19-year-old girls globally. The strategy emphasizes ending child marriage, expanding girls’ access to education, and improving sexual and reproductive health services. Around 21 million girls in low- and middle-income countries become pregnant annually, with nearly half of the pregnancies unintended. Early pregnancies are tied to gender inequality, limited education, poverty, and restricted access to health services. The guidelines advocate for laws banning marriage under 18, school retention incentives, and comprehensive sexuality education. Education alone could cut child marriage rates by two-thirds. WHO also stresses the need for adolescent-friendly healthcare, including contraception and safe abortion access without requiring parental consent. By empowering girls and boys alike with knowledge and resources, the WHO aims to reduce adolescent pregnancies and ensure young people can make informed choices about their futures.
