Intuitive Surgical Expands da Vinci 5 Robot into Cardiac Surgery

Intuitive Surgical provided details on its new cardiac surgery initiative for the da Vinci 5 robot, highlighting nine FDA-cleared procedures, including mitral and tricuspid valve repair, mitral valve replacement, and left atrial appendage closure. These procedures target key markets of heart device companies like Boston Scientific and Abbott. The system allows surgeons to operate through small incisions without splitting the breastbone, offering a minimally invasive alternative to traditional open-heart surgery.

The FDA clearance also covers internal mammary artery mobilization, atrial septal defect repair, atrial myxoma excision, patent foramen ovale closure, and epicardial pacing lead placement, all using non-force feedback instruments.

Intuitive plans a limited U.S. rollout through 2026 to establish cardiac programs while pursuing approvals in Europe and other regions. A dedicated team will support clinical evidence generation, training programs, and cardiac-specific instruments, aiming to create consistent, scalable, and sustainable robotic cardiac surgery initiatives worldwide.
