Medtronic is partnering with Precision Neuroscience to integrate its Layer 7 Cortical Interface, a thin-film microelectrode array, with Medtronic’s StealthStation surgical navigation system. The collaboration aims to provide surgeons with real-time structural and functional brain mapping during procedures.
Layer 7, cleared by the FDA for temporary recording, monitoring, and stimulation of cortical electrical signals, can be implanted via open or burr hole procedures and used with standard imaging. Currently, structural and functional visualization often rely on separate tools, which can slow intraoperative decision-making.
By combining Layer 7 with StealthStation, surgeons can locate anatomical structures while simultaneously accessing high-resolution functional data. Precision expects this integration to accelerate clinical adoption of its technology.
The partnership follows significant investment in the brain-computer interface sector, with Precision raising $102 million in 2024 and competitors like Synchron raising $200 million.
