Varian Expands Radiotherapy Use to Osteoarthritis Treatment

Varian, a subsidiary of Siemens Healthineers, has received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to use its TrueBeam radiotherapy systems for treating osteoarthritis (OA) with low-dose radiation therapy (LDRT).

The approval applies to systems including TrueBeam, TrueBeam STx, VitalBeam, and Edge, marking a significant expansion beyond oncology into chronic musculoskeletal conditions. LDRT is believed to reduce inflammation, relieve pain, improve joint function, and potentially delay the need for surgery in patients with treatment-resistant OA.

With OA affecting millions globally, many patients continue to experience pain despite standard treatments like medications. This new outpatient option offers an alternative for those with limited relief.

The clearance reflects a broader shift in using precision radiotherapy for non-cancer conditions, combining imaging and therapy to address unmet medical needs and improve patient quality of life.
