Watchman Device Matches Blood Thinners in Stroke Prevention Trial

Boston Scientific has reported positive three-year data for its Watchman FLX left atrial appendage closure device, showing comparable effectiveness to blood thinners in reducing stroke risk and mortality in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation. Findings from the CHAMPION-AF trial were presented at the American College of Cardiology Annual Meeting 2026 and published in the The New England Journal of Medicine.

The 3,000-patient study met key safety and efficacy goals and showed a 45% reduction in non-procedural bleeding. Patients receiving standard anticoagulants experienced nearly double the bleeding rate compared to those implanted with the device.

While a slightly higher rate of ischemic stroke was observed in the device group, experts noted overall strong clinical potential. The company plans to expand its use as a first-line alternative to long-term anticoagulant therapy.
