FSSAI: Eggs safe to eat, cancer risk claims misleading

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has clarified that eggs sold in India are safe for consumption, dismissing recent claims linking them to cancer as misleading and scientifically unsupported. The regulator responded to social media reports suggesting eggs contain carcinogenic substances, which sparked public concern.

FSSAI emphasized that no credible scientific evidence or health authority has ever linked normal egg consumption to cancer. Allegations regarding nitrofuran metabolites in eggs are unfounded, as nitrofurans are strictly banned in poultry and egg production. Trace detections in tests, such as AOZ, may occur due to environmental factors or feed, not deliberate use, and are not indicative of health risk.

The authority reaffirmed that, under regulatory standards, eggs remain safe, nutritious, and an important part of a balanced diet.
