Review Highlights Pecans’ Role in Heart and Cholesterol Health

A comprehensive review published in Nutrients finds that pecans may help improve cholesterol levels and support cardiovascular health. Researchers from the Illinois Institute of Technology analyzed 52 peer-reviewed studies spanning 2000 to 2025.

Evidence consistently shows that regular pecan consumption is linked to reductions in total cholesterol, LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol. Rich in unsaturated fats, fiber, and polyphenols, pecans may enhance antioxidant activity and improve lipid metabolism — key factors in heart health.

The review also notes that pecan consumers tend to have higher overall diet quality scores, based on data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

Emerging research suggests potential benefits for satiety, gut health, and cognitive function, though findings on blood sugar and weight remain mixed.

The study was supported by the American Pecan Promotion Board, which had no influence on the results.
