Hypertension in India affects about 220 million people, but only 12% effectively control it, says WHO. Though 31% of adults aged 30–79 have high blood pressure, awareness and treatment rates are low—just 37% diagnosed and 30% treated. Hypertension, often symptomless, raises risks of heart attacks, strokes, and kidney disease. Nearly 30% of undiagnosed cases have dangerously high readings above 160/100 mmHg. Genetics, age, and lifestyle factors like high salt intake, inactivity, and stress contribute. Experts stress regular monitoring, early detection, and lifestyle changes—such as balanced diet, exercise, and home BP checks using validated devices. Controlling hypertension could prevent millions of deaths globally and in India. Awareness and early action remain vital to combat this “silent killer.”
