On World Malaria Day 2025, the World Health Organization (WHO) called for intensified global and local efforts to eliminate malaria, under the theme “Malaria ends with us: reinvest, reimagine, reignite.” Since 2000, over 2 billion cases and 13 million deaths have been averted, and 45 countries have been certified malaria-free. Yet malaria still caused nearly 600,000 deaths in 2023, with 95% in Africa.
Progress is fragile, threatened by drug resistance, weak health systems, and funding shortfalls. WHO warns of setbacks due to upcoming 2025 funding cuts.
Encouragingly, Africa’s rollout of malaria vaccines and next-generation insecticide-treated nets offers renewed hope. WHO urges governments to increase domestic investment, innovate with new tools, and prioritize malaria in national health strategies.
