AtriCure Debuts Dual-Energy EnCompass Clamp in Initial Patient Procedures

AtriCure has performed the first procedures using its new dual-energy EnCompass Clamp, which combines pulsed field ablation (PFA) with radiofrequency (RF) ablation for open-chest cardiac surgeries. The platform allows surgeons to use PFA, RF, or both in combination to create heart lesions, aiming to shorten procedural times and introduce PFA as a complementary energy source.

The device, currently unapproved for commercial use, is expected to enter clinical trials next year. In the initial two patients treated at Victorian Heart Hospital in Australia, the platform achieved a complete “box lesion,” isolating the pulmonary veins and left atrial posterior wall in under 60 seconds.

AtriCure’s existing EnCompass Clamp, launched in the U.S. in 2022 and recently in Europe, uses RF energy to treat atrial fibrillation without opening the atrium. The company credited growing adoption of the clamp with nearly 16% year-over-year revenue growth in Q3 and anticipates that integrating PFA will further drive demand, particularly during concomitant procedures such as coronary artery bypass graft surgeries.
