DaVita, a major kidney care provider, confirmed it has been targeted by a ransomware attack that is disrupting its operations. The company discovered the attack on Saturday, which encrypted portions of its network, and promptly activated response protocols, isolating affected systems.
While the full scope and impact of the attack remain unclear, DaVita has assured that patient care continues without interruption. The company operates over 2,600 outpatient dialysis centers nationwide, but the extent of the disruption is not yet known.
Ransomware, which blocks access to data until a ransom is paid, has become a growing concern in healthcare, with two-thirds of organizations reporting incidents in the past year. This attack follows a series of significant cyberattacks on the industry, including a massive breach affecting Change Healthcare and Ascension in 2024.
