Intuitive Surgical has gained FDA approval for its da Vinci Single Port system to perform procedures via the anus. This advancement enables physicians to access upper rectal lesions without abdominal incisions, unlike traditional transabdominal resections that often involve multiple cuts and removal of the rectum. The device is specifically designed for use in tight anatomical areas, allowing surgeons to operate with three articulated instruments and a camera through a single entry site. Last month, the system also received clearance for a compatible stapler, strengthening its commercial prospects in the U.S., where adoption is expected to follow international trends. The company saw a 94% rise in single port procedures in Q1, primarily from Korea, Europe, and Japan. Meanwhile, ResMed has acquired Virtuox, a home-based diagnostic company specializing in conditions like sleep apnea. The deal expands ResMed’s reach in diagnostics, aligning with its strategy to increase CPAP prescriptions. Financial terms were not disclosed as the acquisition is non-material.
