Maharashtra Orders High-Level Probe Into Steep Medical Device Price Markups

The Maharashtra government has announced a high-level investigation into unusually large price differences reported for several medical devices and hospital consumables. Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule said on September 17 that the matter would be discussed at the upcoming state Cabinet meeting. The issue is also expected to be brought to the attention of the central government as authorities examine the reasons behind the significant price variations.

The state FDA's findings have drawn attention to the pricing of commonly used medical products supplied to hospitals. According to the report, some devices and consumables were being sold at prices considerably higher than their procurement costs, prompting questions about pricing practices in the healthcare supply chain.
