Medtronic Secures CE Mark for Next-Generation Defibrillation Lead

Medtronic has received CE mark approval for its OmniaSecure small-diameter defibrillation lead, designed to improve durability while minimising complications. Built on the company’s SelectSecure Model 3830 pacing lead, the innovation aims to deliver long-term reliability without compromising the benefits of a thinner design.

Traditional larger leads have been linked to issues such as venous blockage and valve dysfunction, while earlier attempts at smaller leads raised safety concerns. Learning from past challenges, Medtronic engineered OmniaSecure to resist fractures and support extended use, especially as patients live longer and require devices for decades.

Performance modelling suggests a high fracture-free survival rate over 10 years, outperforming several earlier-generation leads. The device has already been used in initial implants across European centres. The CE mark allows its use for right ventricular stimulation, while recent U.S. approval also supports left bundle branch placement.
