NHS to Adopt 11 Robotic Surgery Systems Including Da Vinci and Hugo

Surgeons in England’s NHS will soon use 11 advanced robotic systems to enhance surgical care, following approval by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

Five systems, including Da Vinci (Intuitive Surgical), Hugo (Medtronic), Senhance (Asensus), and Versius (CMR Surgical), are approved for soft tissue surgeries like hernia repair and tumour removal. Six others are recommended for hip and knee replacements.

These robots offer greater precision and flexibility than human hands, with some controlled via consoles and others handheld.

NICE supports their use while gathering more data on cost-effectiveness over the next three years.

Robotic surgery is linked to faster recovery, fewer complications, and shorter hospital stays, offering long-term benefits to both patients and the healthcare system.

The surgical robotics market is expected to grow from $2.9bn in 2024 to $9.2bn by 2034.
