NuGen to Advance Needle-Free Cartridge-Based Injection System into Clinical Trials

Canada-based NuGen Medical Devices is set to launch clinical trials of its next-generation needle-free injection system, designed with an internal cartridge for insulin delivery.

The new platform, protected under international patent WO2021206553—granted in China and the EU, with applications pending in the US and Canada—integrates a sterile insulin cartridge directly into NuGen’s autoinjector. Developed by inventor Nicky Canton, the design removes the need for external connectors or manual filling, which are required in existing systems such as InsuJet.

Key innovations include the elimination of external adaptors for simpler use and a backflow control mechanism to address high-pressure backflow, a common challenge in jet injection technology.

NuGen plans to develop working prototypes within six months for demonstration and usability studies, with full tooling investment scheduled for early next year to enable scaled manufacturing and commercialisation.

The company will leverage its current needle-free platform to collect clinical data for new drug indications while concurrently developing the cartridge-based system, which is expected to be particularly beneficial for patients requiring daily injections.
