UK Researchers Launch 4D Medical Device Project

Experts from University of Birmingham and Imperial College London have launched 4D Health Tech, a project focused on developing medical devices that adapt to growth, movement, and tissue regeneration. The initiative aims to enhance healing, improve patient outcomes, and reduce costs in UK medical device manufacturing.

Backed by £1.2m from UKRI's EPSRC, the three-year project will establish Network Plus, connecting academics, businesses, clinicians, patients, and policymakers to drive long-term research. This aligns with the UK’s £10m investment in sustainable, circular economy-driven medical manufacturing.

The project complements the rise of 3D printing in medical devices, which is growing at 21% CAGR and projected to reach $4bn by 2026. Companies are expanding 3D printing investments to produce custom prosthetics, implants, and surgical tools, catering to individual patient needs.
