GLP-1 Weight-Loss Drugs: Why Nutrition Support Is Critical

New research from University College London and the University of Cambridge warns that people using modern weight-loss medications may face preventable health risks without proper dietary guidance. Published in Obesity Reviews, the review found limited high-quality evidence on how nutrition advice influences diet quality, protein intake, and body composition during treatment.

Drugs such as semaglutide and tirzepatide — sold as Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro — mimic GLP-1, reducing appetite and calorie intake by up to 39%. However, lean mass can account for as much as 40% of weight lost, raising concerns about muscle depletion and nutrient deficiencies.

Although the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence recommends these drugs within structured programs, most UK users obtain them privately without consistent nutrition support. Researchers suggest adapting post-bariatric care principles and have launched AMPLIFY to better understand patients’ real-world experiences.
