Restricting meals to fewer hours in the day may not necessarily improve metabolic health, particularly when most food is consumed later, according to new research involving nearly 17,000 Korean adults.
Researchers analysed dietary and health information from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and identified three distinct eating patterns: early eating, grazing and late-short eating.
People following the early pattern consumed a larger share of their daily calories before 11 a.m. and relatively less after 5 p.m. Those in the grazing group ate more frequently and had the longest daily eating window. In contrast, the late-short group had fewer eating occasions and the shortest eating window but consumed a greater proportion of calories later in the day.
The findings showed that participants following the late-short pattern had higher odds of metabolic syndrome compared with early eaters. They were also more likely to have elevated blood pressure, fasting blood glucose and triglyceride levels.
The grazing pattern produced mixed results. Participants in this group had greater odds of elevated fasting glucose but lower odds of abdominal obesity and overall obesity compared with those following the early eating pattern.
The researchers adjusted their analysis for several factors, including age, sex, income, education, physical activity, sleep duration, smoking, alcohol consumption, total energy intake and dietary patterns.
However, the study was cross-sectional and therefore cannot establish that meal timing directly caused the metabolic differences observed.
The findings suggest that the timing and distribution of daily calorie intake may deserve as much attention as the length of the eating window when evaluating time-restricted dietary approaches.
