Pecans Show Promise for Heart Health and Better Diet Quality

A recent review published in the journal Nutrients highlights the potential health benefits of pecans, especially for cardiovascular health and overall diet quality. Researchers from the Illinois Institute of Technology analyzed more than 20 years of scientific studies to evaluate how pecans influence human health.

The review found consistent evidence that regular consumption of pecans may help improve important heart health markers. Several human studies indicate that eating moderate portions of pecans can lower total cholesterol, LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol levels. Pecans are also rich in polyphenols and other antioxidant compounds that may help reduce oxidative stress and support healthier lipid metabolism.

In addition, pecans may contribute to improved diet quality and increased feelings of fullness. People who regularly include pecans in their diets often score higher on the Healthy Eating Index. While results on blood sugar control and weight changes remain mixed, current research suggests pecans do not contribute to weight gain.
