A recent nationwide survey commissioned by Country Delight in collaboration with LocalCircles reveals significant gaps in protein awareness and intake across urban India. Drawing over 2 lakh responses from 25 major cities and districts, the study shows that 60% of urban Indians do not consume protein-rich foods daily. Only 4 in 10 respondents regularly include sources such as lentils, eggs, milk, paneer, fish, or nuts in their meals.
The findings also highlight limited understanding of daily protein needs, as recommended by the Indian Council of Medical Research, and widespread lack of intake tracking. Affordability emerged as the primary constraint, followed by taste preferences and dietary choices. While availability is not a major concern, awareness remains low, with many respondents unaware of protein’s role in muscle strength, immunity, and energy — underscoring the need for stronger nutrition education efforts.
