Quantum-Safe Architectures Designed For Critical Infrastructure Operators

Consortia that bring together universities, vendors, and operators in sectors like energy, telecom, and government are publishing reference architectures that blend post-quantum cryptography, hardware roots of trust, and in some cases quantum key distribution for high-value links. These designs treat long-term confidentiality as a central requirement, accounting for “harvest now, decrypt later” scenarios by prioritizing protection of data that must remain secret for decades, and recommending staged upgrades where the most sensitive systems migrate to quantum-safe methods first. Researchers supporting this work are also documenting operational lessons from early pilots such as performance impacts, interoperability problems, and skills gaps to help infrastructure operators plan budgets, training, and vendor coordination for multi-year quantum transition programs rather than ad-hoc, last-minute projects.
