When Beth Gardiner discovered that fossil fuel companies had invested more than $180 billion in U.S. plastic plants since 2010, it reshaped her understanding of personal responsibility. While consumers were urged to cut back on single-use plastics, production was accelerating. Her book, Plastic Inc, explores how the plastics industry deliberately promoted disposability to drive profit.
Gardiner links plastic expansion to fossil fuel dependence, arguing petrochemicals are now a key driver of oil demand. According to the United Nations, plastics generated 1.8 billion tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in 2019, about 3.4% of global emissions. She also highlights mounting health concerns, from toxic chemical exposure to microplastics found in oceans, air and even human bodies.
Ultimately, Gardiner contends the crisis is systemic, not individual. While reusable bags matter, she argues meaningful change requires political action, stronger regulation and corporate accountability rather than consumer guilt.
