Study Links Combined EMF and Air Pollution Exposure to Brain Effects in Mice

A new study by Zhang et al., published in ACS Nano, suggests that combined exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) from wireless devices and air pollution particles may amplify neurotoxic effects.

Researchers exposed mice to magnetic fields similar to those emitted by Bluetooth earbuds and mobile phones, along with inhaled magnetite nanoparticles commonly found in polluted air. The results showed a more than fivefold increase in nanoparticle accumulation in the brain when both exposures occurred together.

The mice also demonstrated impaired learning and memory, performing poorly in behavioral tests such as the Morris water maze. In addition, scientists observed changes in gene expression linked to neurodegenerative processes.

The findings highlight growing concerns about real-world exposure to multiple environmental stressors. While the study was conducted in animals, it raises important questions about potential interactions between everyday device use and pollution, warranting further investigation into long-term human health impacts.
