Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often called “forever chemicals,” remain a growing environmental concern as industries continue developing new variants. A recent study led by researcher Jennifer Sun analyzed pilot whale tissue from the Faroe Islands to track PFAS accumulation over two decades. While older PFAS levels declined—reflecting regulatory success—newer compounds were largely undetected, raising questions about their environmental fate.
Scientists suggest these newer PFAS may behave differently, possibly staying closer to industrial sources or traveling through air rather than accumulating in marine ecosystems. Some evidence indicates they may persist in human environments, increasing potential exposure. Others may still take years to appear in remote regions due to delayed transport or transformation processes.
With thousands of PFAS variants in use and limited detection methods, researchers warn that tracking them remains complex. Experts increasingly advocate regulating PFAS as a class, rather than individually, to better address long-term risks to health and the environment.
