US House Passes Farm Bill After Dropping Pesticide Liability Shield

The U.S. House of Representatives has approved a five-year farm bill after removing provisions that would have limited legal liability for pesticide manufacturers. The legislation passed with a 224–200 vote and now moves to the Senate, where further debate—particularly on pesticide-related issues—is expected.

Initially, the bill included protections for pesticide companies against lawsuits alleging health harms, such as cancer. However, an amendment led by Anna Paulina Luna removed this language, arguing it was necessary to better safeguard public health. The amendment gained bipartisan support.

House Agriculture Committee Chair Glenn Thompson described the bill as a win for farmers and consumers, though he warned the pesticide issue could resurface during Senate negotiations.

Democrats, including Jim McGovern, criticized the bill for inadequate farmer support amid economic pressures. The legislation also covers conservation, rural development, and agricultural programs, but faces a challenging path before becoming law.
