A new study published in Environment International shows that reducing the use of personal care products can rapidly decrease harmful chemical levels in the body. Researchers found that even short-term changes—over just five days—led to notable drops in substances linked to hormone disruption, cancer, and reproductive issues.
The study tracked 103 young women who replaced conventional cosmetics and hygiene products with safer alternatives. Urine analysis revealed significant declines in key chemicals: bisphenol A (BPA) fell by 39%, parabens by 30%, and phthalates by 22%. Other compounds, including phenoxyacetic acid, also dropped sharply.
These findings highlight how everyday product choices influence chemical exposure. However, experts stress that responsibility should not fall solely on consumers. While switching to non-toxic options can help, stronger regulations are needed to limit harmful ingredients in widely used products and ensure long-term public health protection.
