A study in Environmental Pollution shows that California’s 2014 regulations, which allowed furniture manufacturers to meet flammability standards without using PBDE flame retardants, effectively reduced consumer exposure to these chemicals.
Consumers who replaced older furniture with products made after the policy update experienced significant drops in blood PBDE levels, while those who kept older furniture saw smaller, slower declines. PBDEs, used since the 1970s in electronics, textiles, car upholstery, and furniture, are linked to cancer, reproductive issues, and developmental delays in children.
The study highlights that regulatory changes can have meaningful health benefits, emphasizing the importance of reducing harmful chemical exposures while considering the safety of replacement materials. Updating flammability standards offers a practical, population-level approach to protecting public health.
