Detroit’s Rouge River, flowing into the Detroit River and Lake Erie, is heavily contaminated with PFAS, persistent chemicals linked to cancer, liver damage, reproductive issues, and reduced vaccine response. Testing by Detroit Riverkeeper and Waterkeeper Alliance found PFAS in 98% of U.S. surface water sites, with PFHxS at 16 ppt (above the 10 ppt EPA limit) and PFOA at 44 ppt (over ten times the 4 ppt limit).
Wastewater treatment plants are a major pathway, discharging PFAS into rivers. Even Detroit’s facility, which has enforceable limits, lacks the technology to remove these toxins, leaving residents exposed. Low-income communities face additional burdens from rising utility and healthcare costs.
Advocates urge the EPA to maintain and strengthen PFAS regulations, implement regular river monitoring, and hold polluting industries accountable. Without action, PFAS contamination will continue to threaten public health, local ecosystems, and future generations.
