The Environmental Protection Agency has proposed weakening 2024 emissions standards for ethylene oxide (EtO), a carcinogenic gas widely used to sterilize medical devices. The original rule aimed to cut emissions by 90% and reduce cancer risk for nearby communities. The new proposal prioritizes maintaining medical device supply, as about half of U.S. devices rely on EtO sterilization.
Industry groups, including AdvaMed, support the move, citing the need for uninterrupted access to sterile equipment. However, public health organizations such as the American Lung Association warn that exposure to EtO significantly increases cancer risk, especially for communities near sterilization plants.
The proposal offers facilities flexibility in compliance and could save $43 million annually, though it excludes health cost considerations. The rule is open for public comment, reflecting ongoing tension between public health protection and healthcare supply stability.
