The European Parliament has formally asked the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) to provide a scientific opinion on the potential health risks of microplastics in food, water, and air. Public concern over microplastics has grown, but significant knowledge gaps remain regarding their entry into the human body and potential health impacts.
Under the mandate, EFSA will review the latest evidence on microplastics, including their transfer into the food chain, mechanisms of health effects, and methods for risk assessment, alongside updated dietary exposure estimates. The scientific advice, expected by the end of 2027, will inform EU policymakers on strategies to protect consumers.
Rising awareness is reflected in EFSA’s 2025 Special Eurobarometer, showing 63% of Europeans recognize microplastics in food, with one in three citing it as a key food safety concern.
