A paper in Environmental Health has identified major flaws in a series of World Health Organization (WHO)-commissioned reviews on the health effects of wireless radiation. Experts from the International Commission on the Biological Effects of Electromagnetic Fields (ICBE-EMF) concluded that the safety of cell phones and wireless technologies cannot be assured.
The ICBE-EMF found that key studies showing health risks were excluded, while industry-funded studies were overemphasized. Eleven of twelve WHO reviews used inappropriate meta-analyses that combined too few and inconsistent studies, potentially obscuring real effects. The group also flagged conflicts of interest due to the involvement of the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), known for downplaying cancer evidence.
Given that WHO’s findings will influence global regulations, experts stress the need for unbiased, transparent assessments to safeguard public health, particularly for children.
