The International Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology (FIGO) highlights the impact of environmental toxins, including endocrine-disrupting chemicals, on reproductive health in an opinion paper in the International Journal of Gynecology & Obstetrics. Exposure has been linked to PCOS, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, hormonally mediated cancers, early menopause, and infertility in both sexes. Mechanisms include hormone disruption, oxidative stress, inflammation, and epigenetic changes, with potential multi-generational effects.
FIGO stresses that clinicians play a key role in mitigating these risks by integrating environmental health into routine care. Recommended strategies include taking environmental histories, counseling on lifestyle and risk reduction, identifying high-risk exposures, and advising on protective measures during sensitive windows such as preconception, pregnancy, puberty, and menopause. Clinicians should monitor regional environmental alerts and can also advocate for policy changes to reduce exposure.
“As trusted health advisors, obstetricians and gynecologists have an essential role in integrating environmental health into routine gynecologic and fertility care.”
