One year after the Eaton and Palisades fires, many Southern California homeowners are discovering that their houses still contain hazardous chemicals, even after cleanup efforts. Tests conducted inside remediated homes revealed unsafe levels of pollutants such as lead and asbestos, raising concerns about long-term health risks. In response, fire survivors and scientists are urging authorities to require formal certification proving homes are safe before residents return.
In Pasadena and Altadena, members of Eaton Fire Residents United organized independent testing after struggling to get clear guidance from insurers and government agencies. Results showed widespread contamination, highlighting the lack of consistent standards for post-fire indoor testing. Currently, no state or federal agency has clear rules for assessing homes affected by wildland-urban interface fires.
Researchers continue to find elevated toxin levels in soil and buildings near burn zones, suggesting risks may persist for years. Advocates warn that without stricter clearance requirements, families could face prolonged exposure to dangerous pollutants long after the fires are extinguished.
