A new report by Israel’s Arava Institute highlights severe environmental damage in Gaza following two years of conflict. An estimated 61 million tons of rubble litter the territory, containing asbestos, unexploded munitions, and unburied human remains. Destruction of wastewater treatment facilities and widespread sewage contamination have polluted soil and water, while particulate matter from bombings has increased respiratory illnesses.
The United Nations reports nearly $70 billion in damage to infrastructure, with over 80% of cropland destroyed. Hazardous waste is often burned or dumped in open landfills, fueling disease-carrying pests. Blockades have long limited access to water, electricity, and food, with only a fraction of aid requests approved.
Researchers describe Gaza’s environmental crisis as ecocide, citing the deliberate, large-scale destruction of ecosystems. Calls for unimpeded humanitarian aid, potable water, and hygiene supplies are urgent, while rebuilding remains a slow, challenging process amid continued hostilities.
