One of Seattle’s oldest industrial facilities, the Ash Grove Cement plant, is under increasing scrutiny for its environmental impact. Located along the Duwamish River, the plant produces a significant share of regional cement but also emits substantial pollutants.
To fuel its high-temperature kiln, the facility burns natural gas alongside large quantities of discarded tires. While regulators, including the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency, recently approved a modest increase in tire usage, community groups argue this could worsen already poor air quality in the Duwamish Valley.
Residents cite elevated rates of respiratory illness and long-standing pollution concerns. Although officials say emissions will not rise, environmental advocates have challenged the decision.
The debate highlights a broader tension between industrial necessity and environmental health, as cement production remains a major contributor to both local pollution and global carbon emissions.
